Ruby - Up until about 8 months ago I'd agree with you. Garfield lost his "fastball" in the mid-'80s, and was consistently one of the worst comics. It only stayed around because of its iconic status, its memory in people's hearts and minds.
Then....
SOMETHING happened. My bet (and I have no knowledge of this, but I literally wish I could bet on it) is that Jim Davis got himself a girlfriend. Or laid. Some reason to be funny again. Garfield started to be funny now and again. it's the damndest thing. (Check out Monkey Barn for some more examples of this.)
Garfield's hardly ever particularly funny... but that's GREAT! :D
