Mutts New Year

Pet Peeves - A list is not an article!!!

Lists which aren't actually lists….for example you see on Yahoo! "Latest 'banished words' list…" and think, 'hmmm, I wonder what's on the LIST' so you click the hyperlink only to be sent to a page with a #$&%ing article about it with the words and phrases scattered about…this is *&$^ing bait and switch…I didn't want to read a #$&%ing article, I just want #$*&ing list! Is that too much to ask?!? Now to find out what made the list, I have to sift through a bunch of BS about who submitted it and why someone/s think that the word or phrase should be on the list. I don't give a $^%#ing rat's ass why anyone else thinks it should be there; I just want to know what is there! Hell, the word LIST was right there in the tease! Reading just the list delusions one when in agreement that people might have thought the same way as you while reading their opinion as to why could just anger and piss ya off and make you defiantly want to keep using the words from the list just to piss of the yutz with the idiotically lame reason s/he gave. Although now that I have to sift through the stupid article, I'm tempted to use the words to piss people off further.

Now an actual list - for those who'd like one - if not then you should've buggard off already....
(Lake Superior State University 2009 List of Banished Words)...
GREEN – The ubiquitous 'Green' and all of its variables, such as 'going green,' 'building green,' 'greening,' 'green technology,' 'green solutions' and more.
CARBON FOOTPRINT or CARBON OFFSETTING
MAVERICK
FIRST DUDE
BAILOUT
WALL STREET/MAIN
Internet and texting blues -MONKEY – "Especially on the Internet, many people seem to think they can make any boring name sound more attractive just by adding the word 'monkey' to it. Do a search to find the latest. It is no longer funny."
<3 – Supposed to resemble a heart, or stand for the word 'love.' Used when sending those important text messages to loved ones. "Just say the word instead of making me turn my head sideways and wondering what 'less than three' means."
Overuse in news and entertainment
ICON or ICONIC

Chris Dane Owens - Sexiest Video Ever

I present to you the greatest music video of 2008, and one of the greatest of all time. My only worry is that I'm positive all the ladies of the Barn are going to be fighting over this guy, and no longer love me. Oh well. I had a good run.

Chris Dane Owens is clearly the lovechild of Captain Blood and Elric. But one question: how come sometimes he has the awesome mustache, and sometimes he doesn't? (Which ever monkeybarner sleeps with him first can ask him.)

Rest easy, sleep well my brothers.

Know the line has held, your job is done.

Rest easy, sleep well.

Others have taken up where you fell, the line has held.

Peace, peace, and farewell...

Readers may be interested to know that these wreaths -- some 5,000 -- are donated by the Worcester Wreath Co. of Harrington,Maine. The owner, Merrill Worcester, not only provides the wreaths, but covers the trucking expense as well. He's done this since 1992. A wonderful guy. Also, most years, groups of Maine school kids combine an educational trip to DC with this event to help out. Making this even more remarkable is the fact that Harrington is in one the poorest parts of the state.

Please share this with everyone on your address list. You hear too much about the bad things people do. Everyone should hear about this.

For Sexy Santa Day, make sure you check out my:

Guest Post (for Tracy Lynn) of the Sexiest Christmas Songs

And the latest Christmas Quote on Int. Day. Goes with the theme!

Also (this is weird), in my guest post, I talk about the many different versions of Blue Christmas. I found a website that plays nothing but that song.

See you!

Holiday Myths Debunked

[sent in by Skittles]

A man repacks sugar in packets on sale for 6.70 pesos ($0.36) on a table at a
Reuters – A man repacks sugar in packets on sale for 6.70 pesos ($0.36) on a table at a public market in Taguig …

Many supposed holiday hazards are as innocuous as a tepid mug of apple cider. A review article in the current issue of the British Medical Journal cites five fears that can officially be crossed off the holiday worry list.

Myth 1: Sugar makes kids hyperactive.

"There have been more studies on this than on many drugs," said article author Dr. Aaron Carroll of the Indiana University School of Medicine, "all of which show there is no link between sugar and hyperactivity." Even if the kids are "sugar sensitive" or have attention-deficit disorder, he continued, sweets do not change their behavior.

Parents may think their kids become more chaotic after candy and other treats but "it is in their heads," said primary author Dr. Rachel Vreeman, also of the Indiana University School of Medicine. She pointed to a study that told parents their kid was slurping a sugar-loaded beverage, when the drink instead was essentially water. The parents reported the child going bonkers when objective observers thought otherwise, she said.

Myth 2: Suicides increase over the holidays.

The weather is woeful, the relatives are rude and melancholy moods abound. "But contrary to what many of us think, suicides are actually more common, around the world, during times of year that are warmer and sunnier," Vreeman said. The article also cites a 35-year study conducted in the United States showing that holidays - including Christmas, the Fourth of July and birthdays - are not preferred times to take one's life.

Myth 3: Poinsettias are toxic.

Shooing the dog or child away from the perilous plant of holiday cheer? Let the hollering subside. The American Association of Poison Control Centers has a record of 22,793 cases of human poinsettia ingestion and zero resulted in significant poisoning. Ninety-six percent of the poinsettia-eaters didn't even need to see a doctor, Vreeman said. And rats that gobbled several hundred grams of the pureed flower, the equivalent of a human eating 500-600 poinsettia leaves, did just fine. Still, it's best to call the poison control center when any non-food plant is eaten, she said.

Myth 4: You lose most of your body heat through your head.

Your mother said it. Every hat salesman touts it. Even the U.S. Army Field Manual claims "40 to 45 percent of body heat" is lost through the head, the researchers write in this week's article, but it is simply not true. Body heat leaves from any skin surface in proportion to the area exposed, said Vreeman. As for people who claim a hat renders shorts acceptable in cold weather? "Those people are being very, very foolish," Carroll said. "There is nothing special about the head."

Myth 5: Eating at night makes you fat.

While eating late at night has been associated with obesity, midnight munching does not cause obesity. "You shouldn't be afraid to have that midnight snack anymore than a mid-day or mid-morning snack," Carroll said. The article, citing several studies, suggests that Santa's jolly belly is the result of too many calories overall, not just the holiday treats laid out for him in the evening.

Carroll and Vreeman's book "Don't Swallow Your Gum: Myths, Half-truths, and Outright Lies About Your Body and Health" will be published in 2009 by St. Martin Press.

The SAG Award Nominations just came out this morning. I'm not going to take the time to prep all them for posting (also I'm ticked at SAG right now), but you can see them here.

I have thoughts on the TV nominations, but I'm hoping to complete an end-of-the-year TV column, so I'll save my accolades for that. I haven't seen most of the movies, which isn't a surprise, since they often don't come out until late December or even January!

I was shocked THE DARK KNIGHT didn't get a Best Picture nod. I thought it would be a lock. I guess we'll see how Oscar thinks in a few weeks.

WHAT ABOUT YOU?

What have you seen, and do you agree with these nominations? Disagree? Why?

Quote of the Day - Christmas Cards

I was raised the old-fashioned way, with a stern set of moral principles: Never lie, cheat, steal or knowingly spread a venereal disease. Never speed up to hit a pedestrian or, or course, stop to kick a pedestrian who has already been hit. From which it followed, of course, that one would never ever -- on pain of deletion from dozens of Christmas card lists across the country -- vote Republican.

P.O.D. - Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer Aniston is on the January cover of GQ.

I seem to recall she was on the cover of GQ once before.

If Brad and Angelina have any more kids, Jen might make it to Playboy yet.

P.O.D. - Angel

I got your tree-topper......right here.

the Gifts just keep on coming

I have some more great gifts, for girls, guys, and even kids!

Eddie Bauer Smart Mug - This thing plugs into your cigarette lighter in your car to keep your coffee/cocoa/blood warmer longer!

Internet Radio Jukebox - You plug this into your computer's USB port, and it allows you to select from 13,000 radio stations all over the world. No software needed, no monthly cost, and you can save your favorites right to the Jukebox so that you can take it with you! ($25)

The Shred Sled - It's a skateboard, but the two halves are separate, joined at the middle. the practical effect of this is to allow much more autonomous movement in each section. The website claims you don't have to push off and you can even go uphill. Not sure how that works, but the videos seem pretty cool. The idea is that it feels more like a snowboard than a skateboard. ($100)

i-Spin Portable DJ Mixer - Let's get this party stared, right?! For all you would-be House DJs who are also snobby enough to have IPods, the perfect gift for you to retain your mad flavor without giving up your merlot. Instead of sticking records on a turntable, old scool, you stick in IPods and use the music to scratch out sounds. It doesn't injure the music like a record player might, and they even have mini turn-tables for manipulation. You'll be the hit of the country club! (Sorry for the bitterness. I consider anyone with an IPod to be an insufferable Park Avenue snob, but this thing is kinda cool.)

and our best in show......

VADO Pocket Video Cam - Now THIS is a cool gift. It's a camcorder the size of a cellphone. You can take up to two hours of video and then download it directly to your computer via the USB port. No fuss, no muss. Great for capturing those "moments" that come up quickly. Birthday greetings to Grandma, clips to your website (or even Monkey Barn, hint hint). Comes in pink and silver. I would use this. In fact, I think I'll put it on my Amazon Wish List right now.

ALERT!ALERT!ALERT!ALERT!

ALERT! SPECIAL ALERT! SPECIAL ALERT!

(IF YOU DON'T READ THIS, HYPERION IS NEVER SPEAKING TO YOU AGAIN)

I have decided to do a special Movie Matters column entirely based on Christmas Movies and TV specials.

So, if there is some niggling question you've always had about your favorite reindeer, grinch, or Ghost of Christmas Past, email and ask!

Column will run next week.

P.O.D. - Santa, part three

Jeff Dunham Christmas

Skittles sent me some Jeff Dunham Christmas videos to brighten your day. (The girl isn't even in Monkey Barn, and she puts the regular Monkeys to shame. I'm going to have to make her a regular member right soon.)

TREE SAP

ACHMED - (I'm actually not a big fan of the Achmed bits. Kinda rubs me the wrong way, so i'm just going to give you the link for this one) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfYrkW3F9K8

HANUKKAH

Leverage - Tonight on TNT!

If you like heist movies, you may want to check out Leverage tonight. It premiered (commercial free!) on Sunday, with its regular night tonight. (The pilot episode encores at 9, followed by the new episode at 10.)

Basically the idea is that Nathan Ford is a famous insurance investigator, well versed in chasing thieves. At least he was, before he turned against insurance companies for poignant reasons. He gets hired to lead a team of thieves to steal something back for a guy who had his airplane plans stolen.

But things might not be what they seem.....

The cast is appealing, but this basically comes down to whether you like heist films. If so, you'll like the twist of bad guys doing thievery for good reasons. I'm not saying the first episode was bang-on awesome, but might be worth a look.

(I will have an extended review tomorrow on TV Warrior, the Light willing.)

P.O.D. - Santa, part two

Words fail me.

Michael Franti and Spearhead - Say Hey

My sister in Nashville sent me this video to brighten up my day. I am sharing with you for the same reason.

(My only fear is that once Lady Jane Scarlett and Dragon see the man with the handlebar mustache, they will instantly fall out of love with me, and fight to the death in order to have that fine specimen of man. Oh well. I had a good run.)

Gifts for Gals

Yesterday I posted some gifts for guys; today I have some for you lovely ladies.

From the world of coiture, Wal-Mart has a Bubble Coat for only $12. This is perhaps the most amazing deal I've ever seen. It's labled as "juniors," but according to the reviews that's inccorect; the coats are quite large and roomy. I love this purple, but there is also black. Don't thank me now.

Continuing our Fashion Phalanx, Macy's is offering Cashmere Sweaters (normall 110-130 dollars), for $60. I have never owned a cashmere anything, but chicks like this, right? The above link is V-neck, but there is also shawl-collar, turtle neck and boat neck, for those so inclined. (I had some trouble with the specific links; if you do too, use the first link and just click on women, then sweaters, then scroll down.)

Shifting gears slightly, we have the Snuggie. Basically it's a blanket with sleeves, since chicks always seem to be cold. I refuse to write anything else about this. Watch the damn video, you big babies.

Speaking of babies......

So, I was talking to someone last night, and somehow the subject of babydoll lingerie came up. (And what do you talk to you grandma about?) I got led to this "plus size" website called HipsAndCurves.com. First of all, I continue my outrage at Big Fashion. What the F**k, people?

There's nothing wrong with a big girl; I myself could flatten a house. But these girls are not what I would call plus anything. They're normal-sized. I cannot imagine that straight men make these decisions, since straight men tend to like regular-sized women. You know, with hips and curves. Therefore, I lay the blame at the feet of Straight Women and Gaydom.

Clean up your act, Fashionistas! Quit trying to relabel the queens! (There are some great babydolls here, by the way, for perfectly normal girls. If you happen to buy one, the least you could do is send me a picture of you in said garment.

Up next: cool gadgetry for men, women, boys or girls. (But not haters who decide on fashion.)

Gifts for Guys

More Gift ideas for you. These will more appeal to guys.

Golf Club Pen Set - ($30) There are several different styles and colors.

Leather money clip with card holder ($20) - Dude, you can get it monogrammed. So classy.

Gunmetal Multi Tool Money Clip ($15) - A money clip that's also a weapon? Sign me up!

More Amazing DVD offers

The other day I posted some incredible DVD deals. These are so amazing it's hard to believe, but true. I'm not sure anything can beat 19 seasons of Simpsons on DVD (8 of which aren't even available in America), for $170, but there are a few jaw-droppers that I didn't get to post the other day.

The Cannes Film Festival has a 60th Anniversary package, with 60 movies. They look to be all the winners of the Palm D'Or. It costs $160.

Then there is the Oscar Classic Package. It includes an astonishing 96 movies, including many of the Best Picture Winners (and all nominated movies that are famous) for $210. You should click just to read the list!

And what may be the biggest draw, Disney has their 100 Years of Magic Collection, which actually comes in a Golden Treasure Box! There is a 150 disc edition, and a 132 disc edition. I just looked at both discs, and the only thing the 132 disc edition is missing is a few Barbie cartoons and a couple of Disney Fairy tales. It's not worth 50 extra bucks. Anyway, the 132 disc edition has everything you've ever wanted, from all the regular disney movies, to the Pixar movies, to all the Donald and Mickey and Minnnie and even all the Whinnie the Pooh and Tom and Jerry. You have never seen anything like it. It's regularly priced for 1000 bucks, and the lowest I've seen is $250, but here it's $170.

All of the items have a $17 shipping, but when you consider how much more expensive these would be anywhere else, they're just steals.

Also, remember to visit the home page to get coupon codes for 5, 10, or 15% off.

And feel free to get me something! (I'm going to put up a wish-list tomorrow, Tengri willing.)

P.O.D. - Christmas Songs

Over on the homepage, I have a list of Best Christmas songs. While I was searching for a header picture, I ran into this below. Didn't really fit, but SOMEONE should be enjoying Diana Krall and her legs, and that someone is you.

Foamy the Squirrel on Christmas

Reader Skittles sent me more Foamy the Squirrel Videos. This time Foamy is ranting and raving about Christmas:

FOAMY - NO CHRISTMAS FOR YOU

FOAMY - LETTER TO SANTA

There is some bad language, so you may want to turn down your volume on your speakers. (Until you've heard them; at that point you may want to turn up the volume for your co-workers.)

Fashionably Marge

I ran into these pictures while I was compiling the Simpsons list (running over on the home page), and while they didn't fit into my list, I thought they needed to be shared.

More Shopping

Dude, I have deals for you. I found a site called One Click, and the DVD offers are incredible. So much so that I questioned it, but looking into matters, it's legit. They take paypal, and are Visa guaranteed (which means that if your purchase went sour Visa won't charge you for it, same with Amazon or anyone.)

The trick is, it's in (I think) Korea, and as such there is a hefty shipping fee added. Even with that, the deals are still eye-popping, but to get your money's worth I only included Box Sets. Make sure you look at the home page for coupon codes (depending on how much you're ordering.)

Dude, some of these offers aren't even on DVD in America yet. Wait until you get to the very last one! There are multiple versions of several of the offerings (different distributors), so poke around if you want. I am giving the lowest priced ones, but you may want another.
